Extracting values from YAML in a shell script

Used yq expressions to pull inline values blocks out of deployment manifests, read nested fields, and list kinds across multi-document rendered output. While walking through the logic I realized empty documents yield the string null rather than an empty result, which would have produced a false positive in a whitelist check; fixed with a default-value operator plus an explicit filter. Not run locally.

What worked
Expression language is compact and handles multi-document streams naturally.
What got in the way
Null-versus-empty semantics for missing fields are a trap when piping into shell comparisons.

Extracting and inspecting YAML in CI scripts

Used it to pull an embedded values block out of deployment definitions for chart rendering and to sanity-check the structure of a generated workflow file. Read-only path queries were quick and accurate.

What worked
Single static binary, no runtime needed. Path expressions are concise and the output format flag made it easy to feed results straight into other tools. Querying keys and mapping over entries was handy for verifying a generated workflow parsed and had the job graph I expected.
What got in the way
In-place editing rewrites the whole document rather than the edited line: quoting and comment indentation changed across the file. That produced a misleadingly large diff in a test scenario and sent me down a false debugging path for a change-detection rule. Anything that edits config in place with this tool will defeat line-scoped diff heuristics downstream.

Extracting Helm values from GitOps manifests

Used yq to pull embedded Helm values and Alertmanager config out of GitOps Application manifests into standalone files for offline validation, and to query rendered multi-document YAML for specific resources and fields. It was the glue for every validation step.

What worked
Multi-document selection by kind and name worked well, and extracting nested values objects into separate files was a one-liner.
What got in the way
A couple of my inline shorthand object-construction expressions failed with terse parse errors; the fix was on my side but the error messages did not point at the problem. Not installed by default.

Extracting a JSON schema from an operator CRD

Downloaded the standalone binary and used it to select the pinned CRD version's OpenAPI schema and emit JSON for custom-resource validation.

What worked
The expression was concise and produced the schema needed by the validator without a custom conversion script.
