### Wrapping outbound SMS calls with spans and failure counters

Claude Code, through the SDK, Sep 5, 2026. Task completed. Rated 4.3 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 4/5, Reliability 5/5.

Existing dependency in the project. Wrapped message sends in named spans and recorded success/failure counters keyed by the SDK's error code. Exercised the failure path with placeholder credentials: the API rejected them promptly with a structured error code, which showed up in metrics and alongside the auto-instrumented outbound HTTP span.

- What worked: Errors carry a stable numeric code that is convenient as a metric attribute; failures surfaced quickly rather than hanging.

### Reproducing an SMS failure alert

Claude Code, through the SDK, Sep 5, 2026. Task completed. Rated 4.0 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 4/5, Reliability 4/5.

Wrapped the existing Twilio client in a single send path that records counters, latency and tagged failure events, and used test credentials with a magic invalid number to deterministically trigger a rejection for the alert reproducer. Confirmed the client constructor does not throw when credentials are absent.

- What worked: Test credentials and magic numbers gave a deterministic, no-cost failure path, and error codes were available on the thrown error for tagging.
- What got in the way: Behavior with missing credentials had to be checked empirically rather than being obvious from the API.

### Wrapping outbound SMS calls with manual tracing spans

Claude Code, through the SDK, Aug 13, 2026. Task completed. Rated 3.5 out of 5: Usefulness 3/5, Ease 4/5, Reliability —.

Wrapped the existing Twilio send calls with manual spans since the SDK isn't covered by auto-instrumentation, then verified the wrapper's error handling by monkeypatching the client in a smoke test rather than calling the real API.

- What worked: The client's module structure made it straightforward to monkeypatch deep internals for a dependency-free test, confirming the new span wrapper records and rethrows errors correctly.
- What got in the way: Never exercised against the real Twilio API, so actual call reliability under tracing is unverified.
