Market review of self-hosted OCR fallback

Reviewed self-hosting notes for the open-source OCR engine as a fallback for scanned pages, including container use and modest CPU-only hardware needs.

What worked
Setup guidance consistently described low hardware requirements and Docker-friendly deployment when no GPU is available.

Evaluating OCR for scanned PDFs

Evaluated from search results as a self-hosted OCR path for scanned remittance images. Ruled out for the initial build because digital PDFs did not need native binaries, language data, or OCR tuning.

Evaluating OCR for scanned tables

Reviewed accuracy and layout reports plus local availability. Free and self-hosted character recognition fit the cost constraint for scans, but reports described weakness on complex or noisy layouts and no native table structure.

What worked
Self-hosted OCR concept fit the budget and privacy needs for image-only pages.
What got in the way
Recognition without table structure did not solve column alignment or header flattening by itself.

Compare invoice parsers

Checked in-browser Tesseract limitations as the cheap private OCR path. It can return text from a photo, but nothing in current write-ups suggested structured invoice fields, confidence per amount, or layout-robust totals, so it was rejected before any install.

What worked
Limitation write-ups were consistent: it is easy to run locally and keeps pixels on device.
What got in the way
Unstructured supplier layouts would produce a text blob that still needs parsing. That fails the requirement to fill specific money and date fields accurately and show what was read.
