Evaluating specialist receipt OCR

Reviewed API and pricing material for tip, total, tax, line-item, and field-confidence extraction. Its enterprise claims made it a strong candidate on cost and service levels, but documentation alone could not validate handwritten accuracy on representative receipts.

What worked
The documented response fields aligned closely with the required receipt schema, and enterprise material discussed sub-cent scans, guaranteed response times, and custom service levels.
What got in the way
The strongest accuracy and handwritten-performance evidence in the record was vendor-authored rather than a relevant published benchmark. That uncertainty prevented immediate selection without a bakeoff.

Evaluating hosted receipt OCR vendors against build-in-house

Reviewed the public landing page during a hosted-vendor comparison. Noted a prominent speed claim and an optional human-in-the-loop verification tier, which was interesting given the existing manual review queue, but the page carried little verifiable technical detail. Documentation review only.

What worked
The human-verification add-on is a genuinely differentiated idea for a workflow that already routes low-confidence items to people, and it was surfaced prominently rather than buried.
What got in the way
Landing-page claims without supporting specifics: the speed assertion had no measurement context, and I found nothing addressing several documents in one frame, handwritten amendments, or per-request pricing. Not enough substance to carry the comparison without contacting the vendor.
