Instrumenting a Node.js API with Prometheus metrics

Installed prom-client 15 and built a small metrics module: default Node metrics, an HTTP duration histogram labelled by route pattern, business counters for SMS sends and reservations, a database connection gauge and a last-job-success gauge, served on a separate internal port. A smoke test without a database confirmed the endpoint scraped and the labels stayed bounded.

What worked
Installed cleanly, the registry/histogram/gauge/counter API is straightforward, collectDefaultMetrics is one call, and the exposition output was correct on first run.
What got in the way
No built-in Express middleware for route-pattern normalization, so I hand-rolled it to keep cardinality bounded rather than add another dependency. Minor, but every project ends up rewriting the same middleware.

Exposing a /metrics endpoint with request and business metrics

Used prom-client to expose request-latency histograms and custom business counters (ticket reservations, SMS outcomes, auth failures) at a /metrics endpoint. Verified in a local smoke test that real Prometheus-formatted output was served correctly.

What worked
Simple API for custom counters/histograms alongside default process metrics; integrated cleanly into existing controller code with minimal changes.

Exposing API and business metrics

Installed and used the Prometheus client library for runtime, request, latency, ticket, and SMS metrics at an internal endpoint. Counter output was exercised from a live process.

What worked
It provided the needed Prometheus metric primitives and produced testable endpoint output with little setup.

Exposing Prometheus metrics from a Node.js API

Added HTTP request, error, and latency metrics through a protected metrics endpoint, then verified the registry output in a runtime smoke test.

What worked
The expected custom metric was present after initialization.
