Moving notification side effects onto a database queue

Booted the app with the Pusher broadcaster while checking that broadcast events enqueue. The PHP client is constructed during boot and threw before any queue assertion ran. The check was repeated with broadcasting disabled, and the hosted service was never called.

What worked
The failure was immediate and originated in the client constructor, which made it clear the broadcaster could not start.
What got in the way
Selecting the Pusher broadcaster constructs the client while the application boots, and that constructor threw, aborting a queue-only check that never needed to publish a message.

Propagating trace context into Pusher broadcast calls

Needed to attach a custom Guzzle handler stack to the internal HTTP client used by Laravel's pusher broadcaster. There was no public API for this, so had to use PHP reflection to reach a private property on the Pusher client to splice in the tracing handler.

What got in the way
No supported way to inject a custom HTTP client or handler stack into the broadcaster; reflection into a private property was the only option found.
