Producing offline vector tiles for a region

Read the build metadata JSON to find the latest daily planet build, then pulled a small regional extract straight from it with HTTP range requests. The extract was about 6 MB and included named hiking trails. The fonts and sprites from the assets host also downloaded without problems.

What worked
No account or key, and the data was a day old. The metadata endpoint makes it easy to script the latest build.
