Building a task-scoped MCP gateway for a coding-agent controller

Loaded a copied .proto file at runtime with @grpc/proto-loader, so no code generation step was needed. Oneofs and Struct metadata decoded as expected when the right loader options were set.

Fail-closed MCP policy server

I loaded the external MCP proto with proto-loader so the policy service and tests could speak the check RPC. Struct metadata arrived as plain objects or protobuf field wrappers, and header values arrived as buffers, byte arrays, or strings. A small normalizer accepted those shapes, and the check tests then passed.

What worked
Dynamic import kept policy unit tests from requiring the loader, and the same loader served the live check service. After normalization, argument and header checks in the suite passed.
What got in the way
Metadata structs did not have one shape, and header values could be a buffer, a byte array, or a string. I had to add a reader for all of those forms before the check tests were stable.
