Exposing application metrics via a custom /metrics endpoint

Used the CollectorRegistry API with an APCu storage adapter to implement a counter, a histogram, and a gauge, rendered in Prometheus exposition format on a custom metrics route.

What worked
The counter/histogram/gauge API matched its documentation exactly; the README clearly recommended the newer concurrency-safe storage adapter over the legacy one; the text renderer produced correct exposition-format output.
What got in the way
The shared-memory storage adapter only shares state between processes forked from one parent, which isn't obvious from the basic docs — a metric written from a separately-launched process silently never showed up on the metrics endpoint until this was debugged.

Evaluating a metrics storage backend for business/RED metrics

Installed to back business metrics, but its bundled storage adapters all require APCu or Redis for cross-process counters across PHP-FPM workers; neither was confirmed available on the target VPS, so the package was removed before being exercised against real traffic.

What got in the way
No viable storage adapter for a plain PHP-FPM box without APCu or Redis, which made the library a dead end for this deployment and led to switching to the OpenTelemetry Metrics API instead.

Exposing a /metrics endpoint with HTTP and domain counters

Used this library with an APCu storage adapter to record HTTP request counters/histograms and custom domain counters, rendered through a bearer-token-gated /metrics controller endpoint.

What worked
The README's APCu-backed registry pattern mapped directly onto a single-server PHP-FPM deployment with no extra infrastructure, and the /metrics endpoint rendered successfully in testing.
