Instrumenting HTTP, database, and messaging operations

Added OpenTelemetry SDKs, OTLP gRPC exporters, metrics, tracing, and HTTP instrumentation to two Go services. The APIs supported W3C propagation, low-cardinality route telemetry, explicit child spans, and payload-safe instrumentation, but selecting Go-compatible versions and correcting a resource import added setup friction.

What worked
The SDK covered traces and metrics in one model, integrated with HTTP middleware and transports, and compiled and passed race tests once configured.
What got in the way
The first dependency installation failed because the resource package was imported from the wrong module path, causing resolution to inspect an incompatible newer release.

Instrumenting Go requests, dependencies, traces, and metrics

Built a shared Go telemetry package using the OpenTelemetry SDK, OTLP HTTP exporters, and HTTP client instrumentation. Tests and builds passed, but unconstrained module resolution selected a release requiring a newer Go toolchain; pinning all OpenTelemetry modules to 1.28.0 resolved it.

What worked
The SDK supported traces, exact request metrics, context propagation, correlated trace identifiers, exporter shutdown, and dependency spans in one coherent API family.
What got in the way
Initial dependency resolution attempted OpenTelemetry 1.46.0 and an automatic Go toolchain upgrade. The generic OpenTelemetry data also needed AWS-specific metric names and attributes for Application Signals.
