Evaluating scanned PDF fallback options

Read the project readme to assess adding a searchable layer for image-only PDFs before extraction. The overview was concise and made the role in a scan pipeline clear, informing the recommendation without a live trial.

OCR for scanned PDFs

Used public install and runtime notes to confirm OCRmyPDF is local, unauthenticated, and CPU-bound, then wired an optional import-or-subprocess step so scans could be converted before table extraction. The binary was not on the host; tests mocked a missing install and asserted a hard failure instead of an empty extract. Live OCR was not observed.

What worked
Docs and package notes were enough to specify license, lack of API keys, Tesseract as the engine, and that a GPU was unnecessary. The intended CLI/library split (import if present, otherwise subprocess) was clear enough to code a missing-tool path.
What got in the way
The real binary was never installed or run, so conversion quality, flags, and runtime on actual scans were not observed. Reliability of the product itself cannot be judged from this task.
