Replacing a JSON file store with an Azure SQL repository in a Node.js API

Installed mssql and built a generic repository on it with parameterized queries, a connection pool and retries. I tested it with a fake client and against an unreachable host, where the retries ran and the API returned 503 as designed. I never ran it against a real database.

What worked
The connection pool and typed parameter bindings mapped cleanly onto a generic table spec. The driver's default Azure credential option made managed-identity sign-in easy to wire up. Connection errors carried codes clear enough to map to a 503.
What got in the way
Its dependency range allowed a newer tedious release that needs a newer Node.js than the project uses, so I had to pin tedious separately. The separate community type definitions also left me unsure which version matched the driver.

Creating the SQL Server database on first boot

Installed mssql 10.0.4 to open a ConnectionPool and create the application database when a local flag is set. The driver compiled only after adding mismatched DefinitelyTyped packages; no live connection was made.

What worked
ConnectionPool was a small, direct API for a bootstrap CREATE DATABASE outside TypeORM.
What got in the way
mssql 10 shipped without usable TypeScript declarations in this strict project, producing TS7016. @types/mssql 9.1.7 unblocked the build, but export style versus named imports and trust-certificate option typing still needed extra checks.

Adding relational persistence for inventory and transfers

Added mssql 10.0.4 as the SQL Server driver for TypeORM and a named ConnectionPool import used before Nest boots. The package installed, but TypeScript rejected it until separate type packages were added. No live query was run.

What worked
The driver was the straightforward Node option for SQL Server and accepted a named export that avoided default-import issues with the project's TypeScript settings.
What got in the way
The build failed because the module had no bundled declarations. A separately pinned @types package for an older major was required. Connection, pooling, and error behavior against a real server were not observed.

Installing the SQL Server driver for TypeORM

Installed the Node SQL Server client as TypeORM’s driver. mssql 11.0.1 failed to resolve against TypeORM 0.3.20; npm view showed TypeORM 0.3.31 wanted mssql 12+, and pinning 12.7.0 with --save-exact succeeded. The driver was imported through TypeORM only; no live TDS session was opened.

What worked
Once the major matched TypeORM’s peer range, exact-version install completed and the app built against the client. Encrypted TDS plus a trust-certificate flag for local containers was straightforward to configure.
What got in the way
The first chosen 11.x line was incompatible with the first TypeORM pin, which stalled setup until versions were re-checked. Actual query, pooling, and Azure encrypt behavior were not observed.
