### Evaluating buy-vs-build for handwritten form extraction

Read the public feature documentation for a field service platform's digital job sheet module, as the representative of the industry's actual answer to this problem: capture the data on a phone with signature capture instead of photographing paper. Clear on what the module does, but it is a whole-platform replacement rather than something that can be added to an existing application.

- What worked: Feature documentation was concrete about the on-device capture, parts and signature workflow, which made it easy to judge the alternative approach on its merits rather than guessing.
- What got in the way: Nothing addresses the case where paper is already in use and must stay; adopting it means migrating off an existing system entirely, and the documentation gives no visibility into an integration path for keeping your own data model as the source of truth.
- Problems: Missing capability
