Offline remittance PDF text extraction

Reviewed public licensing and capability material for a commercial PDF SDK and ruled it out because copyleft or paid commercial terms added unnecessary friction for a closed ledger service.

What worked
Documentation clearly described text extraction capabilities and license options.
What got in the way
Commercial or copyleft licensing added procurement and legal friction compared with a permissively licensed alternative.

Evaluating JVM libraries for PDF table extraction

Checked it as a mature commercial-grade option for PDF text and layout extraction. Ruled it out on licensing: the open-source distribution is strongly copyleft, which is incompatible with a closed-source product, and the alternative is a negotiated commercial license — procurement effort out of proportion to a single internal parsing feature.

What worked
The licensing model is stated plainly and was easy to confirm, so the option could be eliminated quickly rather than discovered to be a problem later.
What got in the way
Commercial pricing is not published, so there is no way to weigh cost against alternatives without starting a sales conversation. For a small internal feature that is itself a disqualifier.

Evaluating remittance PDF extraction options

Compared iText (including pdfHTML/table extraction) with PDFBox 3 for Java 17 remittance parsing. Capability exists, but AGPL licensing made it a poor default for this service versus Apache-licensed PDFBox.

What worked
Java 17 compatibility and table-related features were easy to find in current release notes and comparisons.
What got in the way
AGPL is a practical blocker for this codebase without a commercial license discussion. Not installed; extraction was not tried.
