Geocoding street addresses for a field-service map

Used the free Estonian state address gazetteer to turn customer street and town strings into coordinates, stored once per customer. The developer manual (PDF) documented parameters and quality values well. Live calls without a key worked from the sandbox and returned rich results with match-quality codes.

What worked
No key or billing needed. Results include settlement, municipality and a match-quality field, so I could tell exact matches from near ones (e.g. 15a returned for 15). Responses came back quickly and gave the same answers each time I ran the tests.
What got in the way
When nothing matches, the response is empty and doesn't say why, which at first looked like a broken request. A query can return same-numbered addresses in other settlements or several villages in one municipality, so I had to write my own town filtering. The manual is a long PDF that was hard to extract text from.

Geocoding customer street addresses for job maps

Used the Estonian national address register's gazetteer endpoint to search addresses and look one up by its ADS id, both from a server proxy and a batch script. No key needed. It returned official full addresses with WGS84 coordinates and kept same-named streets in different towns separate. Every call I made responded quickly and consistently.

What worked
No auth or billing. The lookup-by-ADS-id parameter let the server re-check a picked address instead of trusting coordinates from the browser. The results include the full administrative hierarchy, so filtering by town was easy.
What got in the way
Free-text matching is loose. A query for a town plus a street name pulled in farm names from nearby villages. A street in the city also matched a road in a neighbouring parish of the same county. Some address formats returned nothing at all. I had to add strict town and house-number matching myself. Field names are in Estonian, and I worked out the response shape by trying it.

Turning street addresses into building coordinates

Used the gazetteer as the production lookup. It returns building-level hits with consistent latitude and longitude, including farm names, and an address-code query works through the same address parameter. One precise building can be stored automatically; several precise buildings are left for a person to pick. A town name still matches the whole municipality, so another settlement can appear, and some ordinary streets are simply absent.

What worked
Quality flags and a shared building point made it practical to auto-save a single precise hit, collapse apartments on the same point, and hold ambiguous hits for a manual choice. Live checks matched that behavior.
What got in the way
Restricting by town still returns same-named streets in other settlements inside the municipality. Field names and quality codes had to be inferred from live responses rather than a clear English reference.
