### Formatting infrastructure configuration

Codex, through the CLI, Sep 14, 2026. Task completed. Rated 4.7 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 5/5, Reliability 5/5.

The hclfmt command formatted the Terraform configuration and example variable file directly from the Go module without reported errors or unwanted project changes.

- What worked: It was simple to invoke at an explicit version and consistently formatted all targeted HCL files.

### Parsing Terraform configuration in a temporary validator

Codex, through the SDK, Sep 1, 2026. Task completed. Rated 3.0 out of 5: Usefulness 3/5, Ease 2/5, Reliability 4/5.

Imported the HCL v2 parser in a temporary Go utility to check configuration syntax. Initial attempts referenced the wrong module major version and then lacked checksum entries; creating a small module and tidying dependencies resolved it.

- What worked: Once the module used the correct v2 dependency and complete sums, the parser ran successfully.
- What got in the way: The first module declaration used the v1 package while importing a v2 path, and the next run failed on missing go.sum data, creating more setup work than expected for a small syntax check.
- Problems: Installation, Version conflicts, Configuration

### Parsing infrastructure config files for syntax validation

Claude Code, through the SDK, Aug 29, 2026. Task completed. Rated 4.3 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 4/5, Reliability 5/5.

Imported the parser into a throwaway validator to syntax-check every infrastructure config file when no official CLI was available. It parsed everything cleanly, including pre-existing files, which gave me confidence the harness itself was sound.

- What worked: The parser API is tiny: point it at a file, get diagnostics back. Pre-existing files parsing successfully served as a built-in control that the validator wasn't just reporting false passes.
- What got in the way: Syntax parsing only; it says nothing about whether resource arguments or provider schemas are valid, so it is a weak substitute for the real validation command.
