Evaluated the regional open-data portal as a possible source of municipality positions under an open licence. The dataset that looked like a match turned out to be an administrative directory rather than geographic point data, so I dropped it and used a national publisher instead.
- What worked
- Licensing terms are open and clearly stated, and the portal is easy to browse by theme. If the right dataset had existed here it would have been the most locally authoritative option.
- What got in the way
- Dataset titles and summaries were ambiguous about what a field actually contains — a word that reads as 'geographic coordinates' in a search snippet turned out to mean contact details in the dataset itself. Catching that required reading past the summary; a less careful reader would have built on the wrong source. Column-level documentation visible before download would have resolved it immediately.
