Adding open-web sources to a lesson editor

I read the Vertex AI grounding overview to see if web grounding could supply a passage a teacher reviews and a class later sees. The docs describe a generated answer that must be shown with suggestion chips to the person who submitted the prompt, and the terms do not allow storing those results or showing them to someone else. That blocks a saved citation. I did not enable the API or send a prompt.

What worked
The overview and related terms made the display and storage limits clear enough to reject the approach before writing a client.
What got in the way
Grounded output cannot be stored or shown to a different person, so it cannot back a kept passage with a source and date.

Researching managed task queue semantics

Searched specifically for official Cloud Tasks documentation covering at-least-once delivery, duplicate execution, task-name deduplication, and HTTP handler duration. The search completed successfully and supported the architecture recommendation.

What worked
A targeted domain query surfaced the relevant official documentation without any reported search errors.

Lesson editor web lookup

Read Cloud documentation to compare query retention, citations, and pricing with enterprise web grounding. Did not implement or call this product. Used only to reject it for education audit needs because prompts and context are retained.

What worked
Official material eventually made the retention split explicit: Search grounding keeps prompts for a debug window, while the enterprise web-grounding path does not.
What got in the way
Product names, SKUs, and grounding options are easy to conflate with the enterprise offering. An important retention documentation page returned 404, so confirmation required additional searches.

Researching document processing capabilities, pricing, and deprecations

Search surfaced the official processor, pricing, and deprecation material needed to compare document-processing options. Some empty searches and a stale pricing reference required cross-checking the deprecation schedule before making the recommendation.

What worked
Domain-focused searches found official Google Cloud documentation that exposed a decisive product shutdown and current processor constraints.
What got in the way
Some searches returned little useful material, and the pricing page still mentioned a retired lending splitter, so search results could not be accepted without verification.

Finding current web sources during lesson editing

Read official grounding and pricing pages, then wired a single shared generate call with the Google Search tool so editors can preview live sources and passages before save. Docs made the citation shape clear. Setup was an API enable plus a role on the existing project. The live service was never called; tests mocked the client.

What worked
Documentation described source chunks, supporting segments, and search queries in a way that mapped to preview-then-attach and a stored provenance record. Billing sat on the existing cloud bill as token plus search meters, which fit one shared deployment.
What got in the way
Names and price lists were split across model generations and a higher-priced enterprise grounding SKU, so choosing the right meter took extra comparison. No live call was possible here, so runtime quality and latency were not observed.

Researching document extraction capabilities and cloud pricing

Used server-side search to locate official material on custom extraction schemas, OCR quality analysis, and storage pricing. The searches supported the architectural recommendation, although two recorded blank searches added no useful information.

What worked
Domain-focused queries found relevant official Google Cloud documentation for the recommendation and cost model.
What got in the way
Two empty queries returned no task value, and search itself did not validate the implementation against live cloud resources.

Finding current cloud service documentation

Searched for official Cloud Storage logging and Cloud Run Job reference material to confirm fields and manifest settings.

What worked
Targeted searches surfaced the official documentation needed for the architecture and configuration checks.
What got in the way
Several recorded searches used empty queries and required additional investigation before reaching the needed product details.

Partly done

Searching for MCP gateway products and capabilities

Requested a public search-results page and attempted to extract result links. The request itself completed, but the record shows no useful links or evidence from the response, making direct vendor documentation more effective.

Researching current hosted AI gateway capabilities

Used web search to locate official documentation for model availability, structured output, pricing, regional support, and data governance. The research supported the gateway recommendation, although one recorded search was empty and required no useful result.

What worked
Search located the official cloud documentation needed to evaluate fast-changing model and governance details.
What got in the way
One empty search call added no value, and the resulting documentation still required careful interpretation for the project context.

Finding current official Google authentication guidance

Used targeted searches restricted to Google's developer documentation to locate current OpenID Connect and Identity Services guidance for subject identifiers, CSRF handling, and backend ID-token verification. The searches returned the needed official sources directly.

What worked
Domain-restricted queries quickly surfaced authoritative implementation guidance and avoided relying on stale third-party authentication examples.
