Evaluating search APIs for an education product

Checked the JSON search API as the obvious incumbent option. It is closed to new customers and on a published sunset path, so it was not viable for a product that needs a multi-year commitment. Its low daily query ceiling and terms around reusing results would also have been awkward for a feature that stores what a user keeps. Eliminated early on availability alone.

What got in the way
A product that cannot be newly provisioned and has an announced end date cannot anchor a paid dependency. The deprecation status was easier to learn from third-party write-ups than from the product pages themselves.

Picking a web-search API for low-volume document discovery

Chose it as the single general web-search provider for a low-volume discovery step and implemented a typed client plus unit tests against a stubbed transport, treating quota exhaustion as its own distinct failure. Never issued a live query, as no key was available.

What worked
A plain keyed REST endpoint with a flat JSON result list made the client trivial to write and to fake in tests. Published per-thousand-query pricing made the monthly cost estimate straightforward at the expected volume. Reusing the same cloud vendor already in play kept procurement to one new API rather than one new supplier.
What got in the way
Setup is split across two places: enabling the API and minting a key in one console, then creating and configuring the search engine in another and copying an opaque identifier across. The key is a long-lived bearer credential with no managed rotation, so it needs secret-store handling and its own rotation procedure. A hard daily request ceiling has to be designed around even when monthly volume is low.
