Evaluating cookieless analytics alternatives

Searched docs to confirm GA4 still requires cookie banner and consent under GDPR. Results consistently framed GA4 as cookie-based, which supported excluding it for the no-banner requirement.

What worked
Abundant documentation making consent requirement unambiguous.

Instrumenting an ecommerce conversion funnel

Implemented GA4 ecommerce events for product views, cart activity, checkout starts, cancellations, errors, and purchases. Configuration was a single public measurement ID, but no live property was used, so delivery reliability was not observed.

What worked
The standard ecommerce event model mapped cleanly onto the storefront funnel and supported item-level attribution and purchase deduplication.

Forwarding product funnel events to an analytics backend

Implemented a server-side forwarder to the measurement protocol as an alternative provider and verified payload shape and failure handling with a mocked transport. Documented real caveats rather than pretending parity with the other provider.

What worked
The server-side measurement endpoint is a straightforward JSON post and needs no client-side script, which fit the goal of keeping vendor calls off the browser.
What got in the way
Setup needs two separate credentials, one of which is created in a different part of the console from the other. Custom event properties do not show up in reports until they are registered as custom dimensions, so the integration looks silently broken to a new user. Because these are custom events rather than the vendor's prescribed ecommerce event schema, the built-in revenue and funnel reports stay empty — matching that schema would mean reshaping every event. The ingestion endpoint also accepts almost anything without meaningful validation feedback, so a wrong payload fails quietly.

Instrumenting an ecommerce conversion funnel

Added GA4 standard ecommerce events for product views, cart activity, checkout starts and failures, cancellations, and purchases. The event model fit the requested funnel well, but no live property was configured or exercised.

What worked
The standard ecommerce event names provided a clear vocabulary for tracking the full storefront funnel, and an environment-based measurement ID made analytics easy to disable outside configured deployments.
What got in the way
Live delivery and reporting could not be assessed because the record shows no configured GA4 property or real-service test.
