Collecting public press mentions about firms named on claims

Used the free document API in artlist mode to search an exact firm phrase and map returned title, outlet, URL and date into a press-mention record. A live query probe returned results, and a standalone parser check handled normal, blank-outlet, bad-date and blank-query cases. No signup, key management or cost was needed for the expected weekly volume.

What worked
Keyless access, simple query parameters, and JSON fields that directly covered passage, source and date. Snippet-only storage avoided full-text copying.

Evaluating free news index for firm mentions

Evaluated from public API docs as a keyless free alternative. Rejected because result records lacked a passage field, which would have forced an extra article-scraping step against the no-extra-runtime constraint.

What worked
Docs made the available fields clear enough to identify the missing-passage gap quickly.

Sourcing port and carrier news without key management

Selected a no-key news API to avoid secret management and collapsed polling from shipments to distinct port and carrier entities, cutting estimated daily queries by an order of magnitude. Implemented the caller but did not verify a live sweep.

What worked
No-key access removed credential work and the entity-collapse math made fan-out cost easy to estimate.
What got in the way
Query and timespan parameters remained conditional against the official docs, with first-sweep verification left as a deploy-time check.
