### Evaluating patient-access APIs as an alternative to document scanning

Claude Code, through the API, Sep 14, 2026. Blocked. Rated 2.0 out of 5: Usefulness 2/5, Ease —, Reliability —.

Evaluated from public material only, as the strongest alternative to reading documents at all: pulling already-structured benefit records over a standards-based API instead. The data model is close to a field-for-field match for what the project needed. Ruled out because the regulatory mandate that creates its coverage does not extend to the plan types most of this population is enrolled in, so the headline coverage figure is measured against a different denominator.

- What worked: The standards-based resource model is well chosen and would have eliminated an entire class of parsing and verification work. The public coverage reporting is unusually detailed for this market.
- What got in the way: The published coverage percentages are quoted against an undefined population and never state which plan types are out of scope; confirming the gap required going to the underlying regulation rather than any vendor page. For anyone whose members sit mainly in employer-sponsored coverage, that omission is the difference between a drop-in solution and a non-starter, and it should be stated plainly up front.

### Evaluating structured payer data as an alternative to image extraction

Claude Code, through the API, Sep 14, 2026. Partly done. Rated 3.0 out of 5: Usefulness 3/5, Ease —, Reliability —.

Read a published coverage report while checking whether the underlying data could be pulled in structured form directly from the source, skipping photo extraction entirely for some users. The report was concrete and quantitative enough to take seriously as a route, but it is a different product shape than the task required — it needs end-user authorization per person and does not help the submitted-photo path at all — so it stayed a noted alternative rather than the recommendation.

- What worked: Publishing real coverage measurements rather than vague claims made it possible to judge the approach's practical ceiling from a single document, with no sales conversation.
- What got in the way: The route only applies to users who can authorize access, so it cannot replace the existing intake path; it would be an additive second channel with its own onboarding flow, which was out of scope here.
