Adding a self-hosted welcome-points map

Queried the public dataset API for the official postal-code extract, then downloaded the CSV it linked. Metadata included format, size, and a direct file URL. A few rows had empty coordinates and needed local handling before lookup.

What worked
The dataset API returned resource titles, formats, sizes, and direct download URLs in one JSON document. The linked CSV downloaded completely and was readable as UTF-8.
What got in the way
Finding the right dataset still took an external search. The published extract left coordinates empty for a few communes, including at least one postal code with no other row, so those entries were unusable until coordinates were added locally.

Partly done

Fetching an official postal code reference file

Downloaded the official national postal code reference file by stable resource link. It fetched cleanly and quickly, but it contains only codes and locality names with no coordinates, so it was useless on its own for a nearest-location feature and I sourced centroids elsewhere.

What worked
Stable permanent resource URLs mean a direct, scriptable download with no portal navigation or account, and the open licence made freezing the data into a repository straightforward.
What got in the way
The dataset lacks geographic coordinates, which is the single most common reason someone wants a postal code table. Discovering that required downloading and inspecting it; a clearer schema summary at the resource level would have saved a round trip.

Sourcing offline geocoding reference data

Queried the dataset catalogue API to locate an official postal-code reference, read back its licence and the list of downloadable resources, and followed those links to the actual file.

What worked
The catalogue endpoint is unauthenticated and returns a clean machine-readable record with title, licence and every resource plus format, which is exactly what is needed to decide whether a dataset is usable and redistributable before downloading it.
What got in the way
The metadata describes formats and licensing but not the actual columns, so there was no way to tell from the catalogue that the chosen dataset lacked coordinates — that only became clear after downloading and inspecting it, costing a full detour. A schema or column summary in the resource metadata would have prevented it.
