### Evaluating purpose-built insurance EOB extraction

Codex, through the browser, Sep 14, 2026. Partly done. Rated 3.5 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 3/5, Reliability —.

Reviewed the EOB-specific API and found it to be the strongest challenger because it was explicitly pre-trained for US explanation-of-benefits documents and advertised relevant claim and payment fields. A bake-off was recommended before procurement.

- What worked: Its healthcare specialization and advertised EOB fields reduced the apparent amount of custom model work compared with generic OCR products.
- What got in the way: Published material did not clearly show every required service line and date, handling of multiple statements in one photograph, or public EOB pricing. Those gaps prevented selecting it without samples and a quote.
- Problems: Documentation, Missing capability, Extra context
