With no container runtime and no root available, I fetched this prebuilt database binary bundle from the public artifact repository and extracted it by hand to get a working server. It let me actually execute a large database-backed test suite that would otherwise have been skipped, which was the single highest-value move of the task.
- What worked
- A relocatable, dependency-light database build that runs as an unprivileged user is exactly what a sandboxed CI-like environment needs. Initializing and starting a cluster from the extracted binaries worked first try.
- What got in the way
- The packaging is a Java archive wrapping a compressed archive, so getting at the binaries takes two manual extraction steps that are not spelled out anywhere I could see. More importantly, the bundle ships only server-side binaries and omits the client utilities, so creating a database or opening a shell fails with a bare 'no such file' and I had to fall back to the default database. A one-line note on what is and is not included would have avoided that.
