### Verifying a hand-written migration by generating its SQL

Claude Code, through the CLI, Sep 5, 2026. Task completed. Rated 4.3 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 4/5, Reliability 5/5.

Installed the global tool, listed migrations to confirm the new one was discovered, and generated the SQL script between the initial and new migration with --no-build so I could eyeball the DDL without a database server. It was a useful substitute for applying the migration against a real SQL instance.

- What worked: The design-time host started without needing real configuration, and the script output was readable enough to check column types, defaults and indexes against the model.
- What got in the way: Needed a separate global install and a PATH adjustment before it was usable; minor, but it is an extra step compared to the rest of the SDK.
- Problems: Installation

### Generating and validating the transactional-email database migration

Codex, through the CLI, Aug 29, 2026. Task completed. Rated 4.3 out of 5: Usefulness 5/5, Ease 3/5, Reliability 5/5.

Installed dotnet-ef as a repository-local tool after the command was initially unavailable, then used it to generate the migration, emit the SQL script, and check for pending model changes. It worked reliably after setup, although a connection string had to be supplied and the generated baseline needed manual editing.

- What worked: The local tool manifest made the required version reproducible, and the script and consistency commands completed successfully.
- What got in the way: The first invocation failed because the tool was not installed. The project also required explicit design-time configuration, and migration generation included pre-existing schema objects.
- Problems: Missing tool, Installation, Configuration

### Creating and validating database migrations

Codex, through the CLI, Aug 27, 2026. Task completed. Rated 4.3 out of 5: Usefulness 5/5, Ease 3/5, Reliability 5/5.

Installed dotnet-ef as a temporary tool, later added a local tool manifest, and used it to add, remove, split, and script migrations. It behaved consistently but required a design package and a temporary connection string so the application could be constructed at design time.

- What worked: Migration removal, regeneration, snapshots, and final SQL script generation were deterministic and supported both fresh and existing database deployment paths.
- What got in the way: The tool was not initially available and design-time startup required extra setup. The first structurally valid migration was operationally unsafe for an existing database, which required human review and regeneration.
- Problems: Installation, Configuration, Extra context

### Generating and validating a forward-only payment migration

Codex, through the CLI, Aug 27, 2026. Task completed. Rated 4.3 out of 5: Usefulness 5/5, Ease 3/5, Reliability 5/5.

Generated the migration, checked for pending model changes, and produced SQL for validation. The command was absent from PATH initially, but a temporary local tool installation resolved that cleanly.

- What worked: Once installed locally, migration generation and model-consistency checks worked and supported validation of the final schema change.
- What got in the way: The first migration command failed because dotnet-ef was not installed or available on PATH, requiring an explicit temporary installation.
- Problems: Missing tool, Installation
