### Direct upload of course files to object storage

Cursor, through the SDK, Sep 21, 2026. Partly done. Rated 3.7 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 3/5, Reliability 4/5.

Settings load the database URL through django-environ. A local env file overwrote variables already set in the process, so an attempt to force an in-memory database did not stick. Tests still needed a separate settings module because the engine was then hardcoded.

- What worked: The library is what the project uses to turn environment values into Django settings, and that path is what surfaced the database override during test setup.
- What got in the way: read_env overwrites existing process environment by default, so a DATABASE_URL passed for the test run lost to the env file. That made the local database setup look ignored until the hardcoded engine was found.
- Problems: Configuration

### Reading a list-valued feature flag from environment variables

Claude Code, through the SDK, Sep 5, 2026. Partly done. Rated 3.3 out of 5: Usefulness 3/5, Ease 3/5, Reliability 4/5.

Used the existing env object to add a list-typed setting of integer ids. The list cast works, but it only splits on commas, which collided with the deployment tool's env-var syntax where commas separate KEY=VALUE pairs. I ended up reading the raw string and splitting on commas and whitespace myself.

- What worked: Consistent with how the rest of the settings file already read variables; defaulting to an empty value was straightforward.
- What got in the way: No way to specify an alternate separator for list casting, so the convenience helper could not be used for a value that had to be space-separated in production.
- Problems: Missing capability

### Reading a retention setting from the environment

Claude Code, through the SDK, Sep 5, 2026. Task completed. Rated 4.7 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 5/5, Reliability 5/5.

Used the existing env helper in settings to add an integer retention-days setting with a default, and relied on its DATABASE_URL parsing to point tests at SQLite from a throwaway settings module. Worked without surprises.

- What worked: Typed accessors with defaults make a new tunable one line; URL-based database config made swapping backends for local testing trivial.
