It was already installed as a transitive dependency, so I made it an explicit requirement and used BigDecimal for the line-item, net, tax and gross sum checks. It behaved exactly as expected in the tests.

Exact decimal arithmetic for monetary reconciliation
Wrapped its arbitrary-precision decimal type in a thin helper so monetary values stay strings end to end and no float ever enters the arithmetic. Used it for line-item extension and document-level totals reconciliation, exercised across dozens of tests.
- What worked
- Already present in the dependency tree, so no install. The API is small and predictable — construction from strings, add/subtract/multiply, comparison and absolute value — and the method names were easy to confirm directly from source. Exact comparison semantics made a strict reconciliation check trivial to express, and no native big-number extension was required.
Exact decimal comparison of monetary values
Adopted it as the arithmetic layer for money after discovering the runtime had no arbitrary-precision extension. Verified exact decimal behavior with a one-liner, then used it throughout the reconciliation checks that decide whether an extracted amount is trustworthy.
- What worked
- Pure-PHP fallback means it runs on any build, which is exactly why it replaced the extension I had planned on — and it let the arithmetic tests actually execute in my environment. The decimal API is small and obvious: construct from string, multiply, add, compare. No surprises, no configuration.
