Building a clearance-scoped records assistant

Imported com.azure:azure-ai-agents 2.4.0 and implemented a runtime wrapper for conversations, responses, and in-process function tools. The README was usable, but two official sample files were missing and the first compile failed until function tool types matched the published API.

What worked
Once tool lists used the SDK’s Tool type and response builders followed the Azure sample pattern, the module compiled. Isolating SDK types in one runtime class kept the rest of the service testable with the hosted client disabled.
What got in the way
Published sample paths for function tools and prompt agents returned not found. Signatures had to be inferred from related client libraries. A compile error showed FunctionTool was not accepted where List of Tool was required. No live client call was executed.

Adding in-tenant multi-step agent orchestration

Added azure-ai-agents 2.4.0 and compiled a production client that builds an agent with function tools and runs turns through the documented conversation APIs. Tests never constructed that client; a local stand-in covered search and write-proposal flows. One official sample URL 404ed; another sample plus README search were enough to compile.

What worked
Once the PromptAgentDefinition and function-tool types were identified, the module compiled cleanly against 2.4.0 without pinning a BOM for this artifact.
What got in the way
A primary create-agent sample was missing, tool-attachment signatures were not obvious, and the library pulling a third-party conversation SDK forced an adapter plus a local fallback so tests could run without a project.

Building a grounded records assistant

Imported azure-ai-agents 2.4.0, read the Java overview and samples, and compiled a Responses-API gateway with function tools behind an interface. Tests mocked the gateway; the SDK never ran against a live agent.

What worked
The published Java types for agents, function tools, and response creation were enough to compile a client after pinning 2.4.0, and Maven resolved the artifact cleanly.
What got in the way
The Java function-calling sample created a response but omitted the local tool-output loop, so the submit-results flow had to be inferred from a Python sample and extra API docs.
