Registering process-level LLM tracing

Installed arize-phoenix-otel, read the register API from the site reference and the installed package, and wired startup registration behind an endpoint flag with batched export and best-effort setup and shutdown. Live export to a collector was not run.

What worked
register() mapped cleanly to endpoint, API key, and batch settings. Imports could stay deferred so the app starts without a collector and tests do not need a running service.
What got in the way
The package README fetch timed out, so register options were confirmed from the API reference and local site-packages instead of that README.

Adding self-hosted LLM tracing

Installed the Python helper, registered a batched HTTP protobuf exporter from app config, and smoke-tested register, flush, and shutdown against a dummy collector endpoint.

What worked
The register helper produced a usable tracer provider with project name, batch export, and an explicit HTTP protobuf protocol. A short in-process smoke test constructed, flushed, and shut down the provider successfully.
What got in the way
The dedicated setup page for this helper was missing, so the function signature was confirmed from packaged source instead of docs. Live export to a running collector was not observed.

Instrumenting OpenAI calls

Installed the TypeScript SDK, registered a tracer when a collector endpoint was set, and wrapped each report request as a parent span. Current releases pulled newer OpenTelemetry and instrumentation lines that did not line up with the app's existing model client, so older SDK lines had to be checked before pinning. Tests passed after explicit register options; live export was not observed.

What worked
register() plus helper spans were enough to add an adapter without building a tracer. Gating on an explicit collector endpoint kept tests and CI from hanging on a default localhost target.
What got in the way
Current SDK releases conflicted with the OpenAI instrumentation line that matched the installed model client. On startup the SDK walked the filesystem looking for a sibling env file unless discovery was turned off, which produced noisy warnings.
