### Choosing a topographic basemap

Reviewed current World Topographic Map tile requirements while picking a Leaflet basemap. Available material indicated API keys for current services, which did not fit a site that cannot take on accounts or billing. The tiles were never registered, installed, or requested.

- What worked: Key and account requirements were clear enough from the research pass to drop this option quickly.
- What got in the way: An authenticated, key-based tile service could not be used under the project’s no-account constraint, so integration stopped at documentation.

Checked World Imagery terms, account, and key requirements as a Leaflet satellite option. Enough detail to rule it out: a developer account, a token, and extra plugin surface versus a plain tile URL.

- What got in the way: Requiring an ArcGIS account and extra client code made it heavier than a raster tile URL for this team.
