Adding managed search to a Rails app

Installed the Rails search integration to index note records with copied parent fields and to query that index from the list page. Queued indexing required a job stack this app did not load, and the stock job could not delete a record that was already gone, so a small custom job sent ids instead. The included reindex task and a switch that skips indexing were useful. Setting names and search result shapes were clear only after reading the installed library.

What worked
Typo tolerance and collapsing several notes for one parent record into a single hit could be declared as index settings. The integration loaded with the app, search could be stubbed, and disabling indexing avoided network calls. The packaged reindex task rebuilds through a temporary index.
What got in the way
Queued indexing depended on a job framework that was not part of this app. The default job serialized the whole record, which cannot be loaded again after delete, so removals were unsafe. Query options were stringified, which made boolean settings unreliable, so those were left as index defaults. Camel-cased setting names did not line up obviously with the client objects.

Adding typo-tolerant hosted search

Installed the Rails gem, wired model indexing and a backend search path, and inspected installed sources after official search and indexing docs 404ed. The gem loaded with dummy credentials and disable-indexing hooks, but raw search stringified every parameter so array options could not be sent as arrays. Tests passed after avoiding those options and normalizing mixed key formats.

What worked
The algoliasearch block, auto-indexing callbacks, and bundled reindex task covered the Rails surface without adding a job queue. Class-level settings did not connect at load time, which made unconfigured test and development boot possible.
What got in the way
Current Rails search and index-configuration pages were missing, so the integration depended on gem internals. Raw search coerced values to strings, which would have malformed array parameters. Response hashes used symbol and camelCase keys that were easy to mishandle.

Indexing records and querying search from Rails

Installed the Rails gem, configured an initializer, indexed two models with after-commit callbacks, and searched with raw hits so lookups stayed off the primary database. Tests skipped indexing when credentials were absent.

What worked
The gem installed cleanly, exposed reindex rake tasks, supported typo settings and raw search, and disable-indexing in test avoided network calls while the app still booted.
What got in the way
The gem is in maintenance while docs push a newer client. A documented failure-raising option was missing in the installed major version, disable-indexing needed careful Proc scoping, and response key types had to be normalized from source.
