Getting a newer PHP CLI without system packages

Downloaded a prebuilt CLI archive for the runtime version the AI SDK required, extracted it into user space, and used that binary for Composer, Artisan, and tests. It unblocked the whole install after system package installation was unavailable.

What worked
The advertised CLI archive extracted to a working binary with the needed extensions, including database drivers required to reason about tests. Version output and later framework commands ran on it successfully.
What got in the way
Finding the correct archive required extra searching, and an early module check mixed the new binary with the system runtime, which made driver support look missing until the new binary was queried on its own.

Installing PHP 8.4 without root

Downloaded a prebuilt Linux x86_64 PHP 8.4 CLI tarball into user space, extracted a single binary, and used it for the rest of Composer, Artisan, and tests after OS packages and Docker were unavailable.

What worked
The gnu-bulk CLI archive was a single binary with the extensions needed here, including SQLite PDO. No root, compiler, or container was required, and the same binary drove the whole upgrade and verification path.
What got in the way
Finding a build with the right extensions took extra checking. Module listing made SQLite look missing at first even though PDO later reported the driver, and one driver-print command failed, which slowed confidence in the binary.

Adding a provider-agnostic in-app assistant

Could not install PHP from system packages, so used the project's download index and README to pick a prebuilt Linux CLI archive. The extracted 8.4 binary included the extensions needed for Laravel and ran the rest of the upgrade.

What worked
The CLI tarball extracted to a single binary that reported a current 8.4 with PDO, SQLite, mbstring, curl, OpenSSL, zip, and XML already present.
What got in the way
Finding the right artifact took directory listing and search; a follow-up fetch of the extensions catalog timed out, so extension coverage was judged from the README and a local php -m check instead.

Obtaining a portable PHP 8.4 CLI

Downloaded a prebuilt Linux x64 PHP 8.4 CLI tarball from the project’s bulk CDN after distro packages and version managers were unavailable. The binary unblocked Composer and tests; picking the right build and reading extensions took extra probing.

What worked
The gnu-bulk 8.4.23 CLI tarball extracted to a single php binary that ran Composer, Artisan, and PHPUnit. SQLite via PDO worked for tests even though the module list was easy to misread.
What got in the way
Had to scrape directory listings across bulk paths to find a filename. A common-channel listing was unhelpful. Module output omitted an expected SQLite PDO name, which looked like a blocker until a PDO driver dump showed sqlite was present.

Obtaining a usable PHP runtime with database support

Downloaded a prebuilt static interpreter binary from the project's distribution site after discovering the system interpreter lacked the database driver I needed and I had no way to install it. One download and an extract gave me a fully working runtime with the driver bundled, which unblocked the entire task.

What worked
A single self-contained binary with a generous extension set built in, no dependencies, no root required, and it ran the existing test suite and the framework-booting benchmark harness without a single compatibility issue across dozens of invocations. It turned what looked like an hours-long source build chain into a one-minute step.
What got in the way
I had to scrape the download directory listing and sort filenames myself to find the newest matching build; a predictable latest-version URL or a small index would have saved a step. Extension availability also has to be discovered by running the binary rather than read off the download page.
