Twilio

Installed the twilio package and used its request validator to verify webhook and websocket signatures, and to sign requests in tests and in a local smoke test. Signed requests passed and unsigned ones were rejected as expected.

What worked

Installed cleanly with pip, and the request validator was simple to use both in server code and to generate valid signatures in tests.

Designed and implemented a webhook-driven repair line where PSTN and media stay hosted and all lease, ticket, scoping, and confirmation decisions stay in the web app. Used inbound voice webhooks, interruptible streaming relay, hand-rolled call markup, signature checks, staged drafts with explicit yes before any write, company scoping from caller identity, and warm transfer with a short context brief.

What worked

Webhook and relay model mapped cleanly to existing web views and business logic. Interruption handling and warm transfer patterns were clear in documentation and needed no new media server or SDK dependency.

What got in the way

No live PSTN call was placed during the task; number routing, credentials, and websocket serving were left for operations, so real-call reliability was not observed.

Designed the repair line around hosted programmable voice webhooks plus a realtime conversation relay over websockets for natural dialogue and barge-in, with confirmation-gated writes and transfer to staff. Implemented request validation, call routing, and relay handling locally without a live number.

What worked

The webhook plus websocket relay model fit a single web deployment well, and the call, transcription, interruption, and transfer events were clear enough to implement without adding a telephony server.

What got in the way

No live account or real call was available, so turn-taking, interruption, transcription quality, and transfer behavior were not observed against the production voice network.

I checked the package index, pinned twilio 9.11.1, and installed it with the rest of the requirements. The install finished cleanly, and the test run afterward passed with no library error reported. The client was wired for webhook validation and live-call updates, but no request was sent to Twilio.

What worked

The pinned release installed on the first attempt. The index query and the later test run gave no sign of a missing or incompatible release.

What got in the way

Request signing, call updates, and markup generation were not observed through a live client session, so those behaviors stay unassessed.

Installed the library briefly so its request validator could compute reference signatures, then checked my own HMAC webhook validator against them, including a URL with a query string. I uninstalled it afterwards because it isn't a runtime dependency.

What worked

The request validator worked in one call and gave known-good test vectors that matched my implementation.

Installed it, used it to build ConversationRelay TwiML and to validate request signatures on webhooks and the relay handshake. I inspected the method signatures to learn the parameters, and tests and a local smoke test passed.

The Connect.conversation_relay builder exposed every needed option as a keyword argument. The built-in request validator meant I didn't have to write my own signature checking.

What got in the way

I learned the relay builder's parameters by introspecting the code, not from reference docs.

Reviewed documentation for phone numbers and elastic SIP trunking as the public network entry point to the voice agent ingress. The routing concept was clear, but no number or trunk was provisioned so no live call was tested.

What worked

Docs gave a clear picture of number to trunk to ingress routing for the proposed call path.

What got in the way

Live connectivity could not be exercised without account setup and deployment values.

Installed via pip and used for TwiML generation (Connect/ConversationRelay, Say, Dial with whisper URL) and RequestValidator for webhook and WebSocket signature checks. Tests and a local smoke test with self-signed requests behaved as expected.

What worked

TwiML builder output was correct and readable; the validator handles URLs with and without ports. Source was easy to inspect to confirm ConversationRelay attribute support.

What got in the way

Never exercised against a live Twilio call, so real-world signature matching remains unverified.

Evaluated and reserved as the public number carrier forwarding inbound calls to the voice platform over SIP. No number was provisioned and no trunk was connected, so the call path remained a documented setup step rather than exercised behavior.

What worked

Carrier-to-SIP model kept telephony separate from app logic and fit the privacy and audit design.

What got in the way

Provisioning and trunk linking were pending approval and credentials, so no live carrier behavior was observed.

I didn't add the full SDK as a dependency. Instead I downloaded the wheel, read its request validator, and ran it in a temporary directory to produce reference signature values. I used those to test my own small webhook signature check.

What worked

The validator source is short and readable, including the edge cases for ports and repeated parameters. Running it locally gave me trustworthy test vectors.

What got in the way

The library felt heavy to add just for signature validation, so I reimplemented that part.

I installed the Python helper at version 9.8.0 and used its request validator and voice markup builder instead of hand-written signatures and XML. A standalone check accepted a correctly signed request, and the generated prompts asked for keypad digits only, with no recording attribute on the transfer.

What worked

The pinned install imported immediately. The official validator matched the documented signature scheme once the URL, token, and form values agreed, and the markup builder avoided malformed XML. Text is escaped when the document is serialized.

What got in the way

Gather defaults, posting on empty input, and the fact that later verbs do not run after a completed gather were unclear until I read the installed source. Early test rejections came from signing a different URL than the app reconstructed, not from an unstable validator.

Installed the library in a throwaway directory to read its request-signature validator and generate reference signatures for tests. My own standard-library implementation matched it. I did not add it to the project.

ConversationRelay appeared only inside a comparison search. I never read its documentation for custom tools, interruption handling, or warm transfer, so that product surface was not evaluated.

Installed it in a throwaway virtual environment only to cross-check my own webhook signature code against its official request validator. The outputs matched exactly, and the library was not added to the project.

What worked

It installed quickly, and the validator gave a trusted reference result for the signature algorithm.

Installed it mainly for its request signature validator, so webhooks and the relay handshake check Twilio's signature without a hand-written HMAC check. Tests and a local smoke run built real signatures and confirmed that forged and wrong-token requests were refused. I wrote the TwiML as templates instead of using the library's builders.

What worked

Installing with pip was quick. The validator worked the first time in tests and in the end-to-end WebSocket run.

Reviewed documentation for multi-number voice handling and SIP trunking, then wired dialed-number dispatch and emergency transfer markup so each caller reaches the correct company target. No live numbers were provisioned and no real transfer was exercised.

The inbound number to dispatch to session pattern fit the per-company isolation requirement, and the transfer approach provided a clear fallback path when no target is set.

What got in the way

Live provisioning, call quality, and transfer behavior could not be verified without account setup and real trunk configuration.

Used to build TwiML responses (Connect with ConversationRelay, Dial, Gather) and to validate webhook signatures. Chose it over writing the HMAC check myself. Checking it locally confirmed the ConversationRelay builder and parameters worked as expected.

What worked

The TwiML builder supported ConversationRelay attributes directly, and the request validator saved me from handling signature edge cases myself. Tests for signed and unsigned webhooks passed.

Downloaded the wheel but didn't add it as a dependency. I read its request validator and ran it in a scratch script to make reference signatures for my own small stdlib HMAC-SHA1 version. That caught one difference: the SDK drops duplicate parameter values.

What worked

The validator source is short and easy to read, and it makes a good reference to test against.

What got in the way

The full package is heavy if all you need is signature checking, so I didn't add it to the app.

Wired the paging step so repeated check failures trigger an SMS alert, with the destination overridable and a loud failure when empty; exercised with placeholder credentials where the expected auth rejection confirmed the send path fires.

What worked

Environment-based destination with fail-closed behavior made the alert actionable while still allowing per-run override.

Used the existing telephony account and SDK to add a voice relay integration for reservation confirmation, ticket lookup, interruption handling, and context handoff on transfer. Compared hosted voice AI vendors and stayed on the incumbent to avoid number porting and extra markup. Verified locally by generating call control markup and exercising the dialog and relay logic.

What worked

Existing account, number, and messaging patterns carried over cleanly. Call control markup for connect, hangup with code, and dial-with-whisper mapped well to booking success and failure transfer needs. Documentation found via search clarified relay frames and handoff fields enough to implement.

What got in the way

Online docs and examples for newer relay frames were fragmented across sources, requiring cross-checking. No live call against the real voice cloud was placed during the task, so production audio behavior remains unverified.

Moved text sending out of the reservation request into a background worker with retries and send guards. Verified against a controllable local stub simulating latency and transient failures; the live messaging API was not called.

What worked

The existing send integration was easy to isolate behind the worker, and stub-controlled delay and failure modes made timeout and retry behavior testable.
