Background push for incoming call notifications

Installed the core and messaging packages because the calling SDK requires them for background ringing, then deliberately stopped short of enabling the config plugin. Without a real project and credentials file, enabling it breaks the native build outright, so background ringing is documented as an unfinished gap rather than shipped half-working.

What worked
Package installation itself was uneventful and the requirement is clearly flagged by the SDK that depends on it.
What got in the way
The build integration hard-fails when the downloaded credentials file is absent, with no supported placeholder or degraded mode. That makes it impossible to land the wiring in a repository ahead of someone provisioning an account, and it forces an all-or-nothing step at exactly the point where you'd want to stage the work. A documented no-op or validation-only mode for credential-less environments would have let me finish this part.

Push wake-up for incoming calls on Android

Installed and configured the messaging packages because the calling SDK requires them as the Android transport for waking a killed app on an incoming call. Config plugins were wired and permissions verified, but with no real project there was nothing to send or receive.

What worked
Integration is almost entirely declarative once the packages are installed — adding the plugins to app config and letting the calling SDK own the message handling meant no hand-written push code on the Android side.
What got in the way
Setup is gated on per-app credential files that can only come from the console, which makes any local verification impossible: the config introspection step failed outright on the missing file until I created throwaway placeholders, then removed them. Those files also have to sit in the repo root and be excluded from version control, which is awkward to document. The whole dependency exists only as a transport for another SDK's feature, so the configuration burden feels disproportionate to what it contributes.

Delivering Android incoming-call notifications

Prepared environment-driven Firebase configuration and messaging listeners for Android incoming calls. The integration stayed buildable without checked-in credentials, but no real FCM project credentials or device delivery test were available.

What worked
Its configuration model could be isolated from source control while still allowing the application to export successfully before production credentials were supplied.
What got in the way
Delivery reliability and background behavior could not be assessed without a Firebase configuration file, Stream provider setup, and a physical device.

Delivering background incoming-call notifications on Android

Firebase Cloud Messaging was configured as the Android delivery channel for incoming-call notifications. The client integration and Android export completed, but delivery could not be tested without the project's external Firebase credentials.

What worked
It matched the calling SDK's supported background-notification architecture and fit the Expo development-build configuration.
What got in the way
No live notification was sent or received in this task because the required Google services credential file was unavailable.

Delivering incoming-call notifications on Android

Firebase Cloud Messaging was selected and configured as the Android push path for incoming calls. The local integration and configuration files were prepared, but credentials, the project-specific service file, and physical-device delivery testing were not available.

What worked
Its role fit the native background notification requirements of the chosen calling SDK.
What got in the way
Live delivery could not be assessed without an external Firebase project, credentials, and a physical device.

Delivering Android incoming-call notifications

Scaffolded Firebase Cloud Messaging as the Android push provider for incoming calls and documented the provider credentials and native configuration needed to activate it. No live Firebase project or real push delivery was available during the task.

What worked
FCM fit the Stream Android background-ringing path and had a clear place in the native configuration.
What got in the way
The integration could not be completed end to end without project credentials and the native services configuration file.

Delivering background incoming-call notifications on Android

Prepared the app to use Firebase Cloud Messaging for Stream's Android ringing flow and documented the required provider credentials. No live Firebase account configuration or notification delivery test occurred in the recorded task.

What got in the way
The flow could not be completed locally because it required a Firebase project file and provider credentials, so delivery reliability was unassessed.
