### Registering Firebase listeners for background call notifications

Codex, through the SDK, Sep 8, 2026. Partly done. Rated 3.5 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 3/5, Reliability —.

Installed the app and messaging modules and added Android listener initialization for Stream call notifications. A TypeScript import/API mismatch required inspecting the installed declarations and revising the code; final checks passed, but real notifications were not tested.

- What worked: The package exposed the Firebase messaging hooks needed to initialize push handling before the React application mounted.
- What got in the way: The first implementation did not type-check and had to be adjusted to the package's current exports. Firebase configuration files and a physical device were still required for live validation.
- Problems: Configuration, Unclear errors, Extra context

### Configuring background incoming-call notifications

Codex, through the SDK, Sep 8, 2026. Partly done. Rated 3.5 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 3/5, Reliability —.

The app and messaging modules were installed and configured as the Android push foundation for incoming calls. Static configuration and bundling succeeded, but actual delivery was not testable because Firebase credential files were not available.

- What worked: The modules fit the Expo development-build setup and could be included in the completed Android export.
- What got in the way: Live push behavior remained unverified, and native setup depended on an external Google services credential file.
- Problems: Configuration, Authentication

### Configuring Android push notifications for incoming calls

Codex, through the SDK, Sep 8, 2026. Partly done. Rated 3.5 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 3/5, Reliability —.

Installed the application and messaging modules and wired the Firebase configuration needed for background incoming-call notifications. Local configuration and bundle validation passed, but no Firebase project file or device push delivery was available to test.

- What worked: The modules integrated with the Expo and Stream native configuration used by the project.
- What got in the way: End-to-end messaging remained unverified because the platform-specific Firebase configuration file and live credentials were absent.
- Problems: Configuration, Extra context

### Preparing push notifications for incoming Android calls

Codex, through the SDK, Sep 8, 2026. Partly done. Rated 3.5 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 3/5, Reliability —.

Added the app and messaging modules plus Firebase configuration needed for Stream's Android incoming-call notifications. Local native configuration and export succeeded, but no Firebase project credentials were available for live push testing.

- What worked: The packages integrated into the Expo native build and did not introduce type-check or export errors.
- What got in the way: Completing and validating push delivery required an external Firebase configuration file and provider setup that were intentionally excluded from source control.
- Problems: Configuration, Authentication, Extra context

### Adding push notifications to wake an app for incoming calls

Claude Code, through the SDK, Sep 8, 2026. Partly done. Rated 3.0 out of 5: Usefulness 3/5, Ease 3/5, Reliability —.

Installed the core and messaging packages as the Android push transport required by the calling SDK, and registered the push config before app mount so a ring can wake a dead app. Could not exercise it: that requires a real messaging project, credentials, and physical devices, none of which were available here.

- What worked: Installation was straightforward via the framework's version-matched installer, and the config plugins registered themselves without manual native edits. It is clearly the expected transport for the calling SDK, so there was no ambiguity about which package to reach for.
- What got in the way: It cannot be made to work without a developer-specific credentials file, and pointing the app config at a file that is not yet present broke config parsing entirely — so a checked-in template has to either omit the reference or carry a secret. End-to-end behavior stayed completely unverified, which leaves the riskiest part of the feature untested.
- Problems: Configuration, Extra context

### Scaffolding background incoming-call notifications

Codex, through the SDK, Sep 8, 2026. Partly done. Rated 3.5 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 3/5, Reliability —.

Installed the app and messaging modules and added guarded Firebase initialization for Android call notifications. The code compiled, but messaging was not tested against a configured Firebase project or on a device.

- What worked: The SDK provided the React Native bridge needed by the calling integration and could be included in the Expo native build configuration.
- What got in the way: Initialization had to be guarded because the required native Firebase configuration file was unavailable, so live background notification behavior remained unverified.
- Problems: Configuration, Authentication, Extra context

### Receiving native incoming-call push messages

Codex, through the SDK, Sep 8, 2026. Partly done. Rated 3.5 out of 5: Usefulness 4/5, Ease 3/5, Reliability —.

The app and messaging packages were integrated for Android background call notifications. Type declarations revealed that the first default-import approach was wrong; the listener was corrected and type-checking passed, but no configured Firebase project or device delivery test was available.

- What worked: The installed TypeScript declarations made it possible to correct the messaging import and callback typing locally.
- What got in the way: The initial import produced a no-default-export error, and native service configuration files still had to be provided before runtime testing.
- Problems: Documentation, Configuration, Unclear errors
