Building a voice phone line for a patient portal

Used Channels to serve the WebSocket that Twilio streams the call over. I wrote an async JSON consumer with signature checks at connect time, and used its testing communicator in the unit tests. The end-to-end call over a real socket worked.

What worked
The consumer API was easy to inspect and extend. The testing helpers made WebSocket tests simple.
What got in the way
Importing channels.testing pulls in Daphne through its live-server module, even for WebSocket-only tests. That forced an extra dependency.

Serving a ConversationRelay WebSocket from Django

Used a synchronous WebsocketConsumer and ASGI routing for the relay WebSocket. It worked under uvicorn in an end-to-end smoke test. Importing the test communicator pulled in Daphne through the testing package's init, even when importing the submodule directly, so I switched to driving the handshake with asgiref's ApplicationCommunicator.

What worked
The consumer API is simple, and accepting or rejecting at connect time made handshake signature checks easy.
What got in the way
The testing package's import side effects make Daphne a hidden requirement for WebSocket tests, which is awkward when you deliberately serve with a different ASGI server.

Hosting the call relay websocket

I installed channels 4.2.2, added websocket routing and a consumer for the relay, and wired the ASGI application and channel layer in settings. The package installed cleanly and the test suite passed with the app loaded. I never opened a live websocket through Channels.

What worked
The install was uneventful, and the consumer-plus-routing split matched a single relay endpoint next to the HTTP webhooks.
What got in the way
Channel-layer delivery, reconnects, and a real media socket were not exercised, so runtime behavior stayed unconfirmed.

Building an AI phone line for appointment status and cancellation

Added Channels to give the Django app a websocket endpoint for ConversationRelay, using an async JSON consumer and database_sync_to_async, and its WebsocketCommunicator for tests. Worked in tests and on a real ASGI server.

What worked
The async JSON consumer and testing communicator made the websocket flow easy to unit test without a network.
What got in the way
Reasoning about cancellation of in-flight database calls during interruptions required reading asgiref internals to confirm behavior.

Building an AI phone agent for appointment status and cancellation

Added Channels to give the existing Django app a WebSocket consumer for the media relay. The consumer tests, ASGI routing and the database access helpers all worked. Every test passed.

What worked
It integrated cleanly with the Django ORM through sync-to-async helpers. The WebSocket test communicator made simulated calls easy.
