Running a local PostgreSQL for integration tests

Tried installing it on Python 3.11 and then 3.9 to get Postgres binaries. The install finished, but no initdb or pg_ctl binaries were present, only the package module and bundled libs. I gave up and switched to another package.

What got in the way
The install reported success but shipped no server binaries in this environment, and nothing said why.

Provisioning a local PostgreSQL for integration tests

Tried this package to get PostgreSQL binaries without root, first with the default Python and then with Python 3.9. I couldn't find usable initdb or pg_ctl binaries in either environment, so I switched to another package.

What got in the way
It didn't give me a usable server binary for the Python versions I tried, and nothing clearly explained why.

Running Postgres integration tests without a system database

Tried this pip package for a throwaway Postgres. It wouldn't install on newer Python, and on Python 3.9 it installed without any server binaries, so I dropped it for a Go library.

What got in the way
The installed package had no server binaries, and there was no clear error explaining why.

Running a temporary local database for migrations and tests

Tried to install it in a virtualenv to get Postgres binaries. No usable binaries came out, probably because the interpreter was newer than any wheel published for it, so I switched to another source.

What got in the way
The install gave no usable result and no clear message explaining why.

Getting a user-space PostgreSQL

Tried to pip-install it as a quick way to get Postgres binaries, but the only published wheels target Python 3.7-3.9 and the environment had 3.11, so installation failed and I switched to another source.

What got in the way
No wheels for current Python versions; the package appears unmaintained.

Finding a bundled Postgres build that ships contrib extensions

Installed this as a second attempt at getting a bundled Postgres that includes contrib extensions, after the first option turned out to ship none. A search of the installed tree found no trace of the extension I needed, so I never started the server and abandoned the approach.

What worked
Installation itself completed without trouble and the layout was simple enough to inspect directly for the file I was after, so ruling it out took one command.
What got in the way
It did not include the contrib extension I needed, which was the only reason I tried it. Whether contrib modules are bundled is the first thing someone reaching for a packaged database build wants to know, and it was not discoverable without installing and grepping.
