Researching asynchronous function tool calling

Unlike the previous image-sizing documentation review, this async-tool guide gave explicit schema flags, output correlation rules, pending-call behavior, and a model compatibility statement. The Markdown endpoint made the full protocol easy to inspect.

What worked
Examples distinguish background tool execution from background response generation and require actual results on the original call ID.
What got in the way
No live API behavior was assessed.

Researching image token formulas and input limits

Public vision documentation explained patch arithmetic, resizing, and input limits, but its model table did not list every currently published model.

What worked
Markdown pages exposed the formula, multiplier, rounding steps, and rejection limits.
What got in the way
Some current model names were absent from the vision sizing table, so the documentation alone did not establish every model mapping.

Hand-written chat-completions tool loop with function tools

Wrote a small lead-scoring loop on chat.completions.create with three function tools and a step cap, against SDK 2.54.0. The tests fake the client, so no API call was made and reliability is unassessed. The tool-call union (function vs custom) is explicit in the shipped types, which is what the loop filters on before reading function.name and function.arguments.

What worked
The response models are plain attribute access, so a SimpleNamespace fake mirrors them in a few lines. Reading the installed type stubs answered the one open question (what message.tool_calls holds in 2.x) faster than searching the docs.
What got in the way
The ChatCompletionMessageToolCall name is now an alias to the function variant while tool_calls is typed as a union, which is confusing until you read the source. Passing plain dict messages and tool schemas into create needs type-ignore comments under a strict checker.

Hand-written chat completions tool loop, exercised with a fake client in tests

Installed 2.54.0 and wrote a small agent loop against chat.completions.create with a tools list: read choices[0].message.tool_calls (id, function.name, function.arguments), dispatched them, appended role=tool messages and repeated until the model stopped calling tools, with a step cap. The live API was not called in this task; the tests replayed scripted responses through a fake with the same attribute shape, so reliability is unassessed.

What worked
The chat completions surface is stable enough that the loop could be written without opening the docs, and the fake only had to mirror a handful of attributes. Install pulled in nothing surprising.
What got in the way
Messages and tool specs built as plain dicts in a loop do not satisfy the SDK's TypedDict unions for the messages and tools parameters without casts or type-ignore comments, although the runtime accepts them.
